That is the new port-side leeboard. Leeboards help keep the boat from being pushed laterally by the wind. They also seem to help make the boat go. Originally, I only had one leeboard and when the wind was coming from the other side, it became a windwardboard. Never heard of a windwardboard? That's because while they work, they don't work particularly well, especially when the wind is really pushing.
