I pre-primed all the parts with Killz2 from Wal-Mart. I made sure to tape off everywhere we would be gluing - paint sticks to glue but glue does not stick to paint. This is the foredeck with the mast partner already attached (the mast partner is a piece of 1x6 with a mast-shaped hole cut in it.)
