This was a great show and I had a fantastic time - building the boat,
hanging with the Coots, and meeting new people. I got to introduce people
into sailing and got to introduce sailors to the Puddle Ducking.
I learned quite a few things about organizing a group build:
- Precut and prime everything. I don't believe people learn anything
by cutting the wood - they are stressed about their skill level and
hesitant. And priming is necessary but also time consuming. My PDR
was done, in the water, sailed, and sold before any of the other boat
building efforts had been primed.
- Kids have to be kept occupied in age appropriate activities AND
they have to be watched.
- You ought to provide everything - including grubbies - for any participants.
People don't seem to understand glue and paint sticks to clothing.
- Advertise advertise advertise. And coordinate coordinate coordinate.
Nobody knows what it takes to make a PDR - sailboats have a lot of
parts and need ropes, sails, and hardware. All this stuff costs.
- And be prepared to do the lion's share of what is needed. You are
the expert and you are it. Have people to help, but be prepared.
