I was looking forward to the Hagg Lake messabout as a proving ground for my modifications on the Teal. The wind was blowing 8mph, up to maybe 13-15 at some points. Even with the sail reefed down to 43sf, it was too squirrly to sail. There is a difference between exhilarating and terrifying.
The boat has a 129" waterline and is 37" wide, 3.5 times long as it is wide. The full sail set is ~80sf on a mast that is almost 16ft high, with a Center of Effort that is 6'6" above the bottom of the boat. That is a lot of lever on a very narrow boat.
I am going to drop the sail area to ~46sf, the mast to 10'6" and the Center of Effort to be ~5' up. Not ideal, but better.
